MODESTO, Calif. – California’s total almond acreage fell again in 2025, marking the fourth straight year of acreage reduction. According to the recently completed standing-acreage survey by Land IQ, the state’s total almond acreage now stands at 1,505,997 acres, down from 1,525,638 acres in 2024.
The 2025 report estimates bearing acreage — orchards planted in 2022 or earlier and currently in production — at 1,401,097 acres, compared with 1,383,332 acres the previous year. Included in that number, however, is potentially abandoned orchards which totaled 19,927 acres. Non-bearing acreage, representing plantings from 2023, 2024, or 2025 and not yet entering full production, have declined totaling 104,900 acres, down from 142,306 acres a year ago.
Orchard removals in 2025 totaled approximately 49,197 acres, adding to prior removals of 66,794 acres in 2024 and 82,958 acres in 2023. The survey methodology, employing agronomic data, remote sensing, field verification, and artificial intelligence, yields an estimated accuracy of 98.8%.
“Our industry continues to go through a period of contraction in acreage,” said Clarice Turner, President and CEO of the Almond Board of California. “The combination of sustained removals, fewer new plantings, and a four-year pattern of decreasing overall acreage reflects structural changes in the California almond sector. At the same time, global demand for California almonds remains strong, and the sector is well-positioned to provide a consistent and stable supply of California almonds around the world.”
The standing-acreage survey, completed in partnership with Land IQ, gives growers, processors, and industry stakeholders a clear, data-driven view of the changing landscape of California orchards. The map-based analysis, initiated in 2018 and continuously updated, provides a high-resolution insight into orchard removals, new plantings, inactive or stressed orchards, and trends in bearing versus non-bearing stock.
ABC encourages almond industry stakeholders to review the full report and consider implications for future supply, market position, and sustainable orchard investment. As California’s almond industry evolves, the Board remains committed to supporting growers and handlers with timely, science-based information, global marketing initiatives, and environmental stewardship leadership.
