Research is the foundation of the Almond Board of California’s sustainable farming program. Almond growers by nature are data-driven, adapting their production operations based on what they learn from research. The success of our industry lies in this approach. But we wouldn’t be able to do it without the dedication of researchers across the California public university system, which is why we are so excited to congratulate four of our partners at UC-Davis who have received national recognition for their water conservation work.

Almonds Make California Strong

If you’ve been around California for any amount of time, you’ve noticed that the face of farming in our state has been changing. Some of the fields that used to be lined with tomatoes or lettuce are now producing high-value, perennial crops like wine grapes and tree nuts. This week in a local newspaper, the Modesto Bee, Almond Board of California CEO Richard Waycott provides some perspective on this change, and the value that almonds provide to California. Last week we shared some of the innovative techniques growers are using to be as efficient as possible with their natural resources, and today we want to introduce you to some of the people themselves.

Did You Know That Almond Trees Actually Produce Three "Products"?

In addition to the nut we know and love, there is also the shell, which is used as animal bedding and as an alternative fuel source in co-generation plants. Then, around the shell there’s also a fuzzy hull, which is used as livestock feed. Using hulls as feed reduces the need to grow alfalfa and other feed crops with California’s precious water.
